O come, O come Immanuel, And ransom captive Israel Who mourns in lowly exile here Until the Son of God appear. O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer Cheer our spirits by thine advent here. Disperse the gloomy shades of night, And pierce the clouds and bring us light. O come, thou wisdom from on high Who orders all things by thy might. To us the path of knowledge show, And teach us in her ways to go. O come, desire of nations, bind Bind all people in one heart and mind. Bid envy strife and quarrels cease, Fill all the world with heaven's peace. O come, thou rod of Jesse, free Free thine own from Satan's tyrrany. From sin and hell thy people save, And give them victory over the grave. Rejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

It came upon a midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth To touch their harps of gold. "Peace on the earth, good will to men From heaven's all gracious King." The world in solemn stillness lay To hear the angels sing. Still through the cloven skies they come With peaceful wings unfurled, And still their heavenly music floats Over all the weary world. Above its sad and lowly plains They bend on hovering wing, And ever over its Babel sounds, The blessed angels sing. Yet with the woes of sin and strife The world has suffered long. Beneath the angels' strain have rolled Two thousand years of wrong. And man, at war with God and man, Hears not the song they bring. Oh, hush the noise, you men of strife, And hear the angels sing. For, lo! The days are hastening on By prophets seen of old When with the ever-circling years Shall come the time foretold When the new heaven and earth shall own The Prince of Peace their King, And all the world send back the song Which now the angels sing. "Peace on the earth, good will to men From heaven's all gracious King." The world in solemn stillness lay To hear the angels sing.

Sweet little Jesus boy, Born a long time ago, Sweet little holy child, We didn't know who you were. Sweet little Jesus boy, They made you be born in a manger. Sweet little holy child, We didn't know who you were. Didn't know you'd come to save us, Lord, To take our sins away. Our eyes were blind, we could not see, We didn't know who you were. Long time ago, You were born, Born in a manger low, Sweet little Jesus boy. The world treats you mean, Lord, Treats me mean too, But that's how things are down here When we don't know who you are. You have told us how, We are trying. Master, you have shown us how Even when you were dying. Just seems like we can't do right, Look how we treated you, But please forgive us, Lord, We didn't know it was you. Sweet little Jesus boy, Born a long time ago, Sweet little holy child, We didn't know who you were.

Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King! Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!" Joyful, all ye nations rise, Join the triumph of the skies With the angelic host proclaim, "Christ is born in Bethlehem." Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!" Christ by highest heaven adored, Christ the everlasting Lord! Late in time, behold Him come, Offspring of a virgin's womb. Veiled in flesh, the Godhead see, Hail the incarnate Deity, Pleased as man with men to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel. Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!" Hail the heavenly Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all He brings, Risen with healing in His wings. Mild, He lays His glory by, Born that man no more may die, Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth! Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!" Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!"

about

Christmastime is a season of contradictions. The fragile gods of materialism worshiped at cash register altars are powerless to put an end to wars of all kinds fought with weapons and words. All the while, carols in the background sing to us glad tidings of peace and good will. The materialism, the tendency to hate and fight, the active desire to satisfy self above all else, and all the other things the Bible calls sin, continually show us that we didn't really know who Jesus was.

When the almighty God showed us what humility really means as he was born in a cattle feed trough, we didn't know. When He showed us what perfection really looks like as He lived a truly human life according to truly godly standards, we didn't know. When the only one undeserving of death showed us what forgiveness costs as He bled out in our place, bearing the burden of the punishment for our sin on a cross, we didn't know. Even when He confirmed His glorious power by not staying dead, we didn't know.

We didn't know. But a holy God's gift of grace for undeserving sinners speaks loudly and cannot be ignored when it calls the sinner's name. Now we know. And now we can truly rejoice with the heavenly host singing those glad tidings. Immanuel has come. The song the angels sang then still carries on. Gloria in excelsis Deo!

“O Come, O Come, Immanuel” was written in Latin by somebody a really long time ago who spelled “Immanuel” with an “E” long before the song was translated into English by John Neale in the 1850s. The words and music are in the public domain, and they were arranged by Cornerstone Church Music in 2013. “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear” was actually called “It Came Upon The Midnight Clear” when it was written by Edmund Sears (the words) and Richard Willis (the tune) in 1850. The song is in the public domain, and so Cornerstone Church Music gladly arranged it. “Sweet Little Jesus Boy” was written by Robert MacGimsey and is published by Carl Fischer LLC. Cornerstone Church Music used it by permission. “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” is a song originally written by Charles Wesley in 1739. The tune was written by Felix Mendelssohn in 1840. Cornerstone Church Music decided to arrange it in 2013. We like that there are so many good old songs.
